Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,
When Father Edward Sorin, C.S.C. arrived at Notre Dame du lac in 1842 with six Holy Cross Brothers, he was a twenty-eight year-old immigrant with a dream of building a great Catholic university in the relatively new nation of America. Despite incredible hardship, including a fire which destroyed nearly the entire college, Father Sorin's trust in Providence and vision for what Notre Dame could become never faltered.
On February 6, 2014, and continuing for a year, the University of Notre Dame will commemorate the bicentennial of Father Edward Sorin's birth. We will celebrate his vision for Notre Dame, his ministry as a Holy Cross priest, and his zeal for building a great university. In so doing, I hope we will deepen our own commitment to making Notre Dame even more, in his words, âa means for good.â
We will begin the bicentennial celebration with Mass in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at 5:15 p.m. I also invite you to participate in other events which are listed at sorin200.nd.edu.
