“On behalf of the University of Notre Dame, I convey condolences to the friends and family of Sister Antona Ebo, a civil rights activist and a University honorary degree recipient, who died yesterday (Nov. 11).

“At a time when many Americans expected nuns were to be seen in hospitals or classrooms but not heard at the vanguard of protest for equality, Sister Antona served as a shining example for her generation and her faith.

“Andrew Young best captured the impact of Sister Antona Ebo’s presence in Selma, Alabama, on the civil rights movement when he said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, one of the great moral forces of the world has just walked in the door.’”
