A Message from Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.: 2020-2021 ND Forum

Dear Members of the Notre Dame Community,

We approach a hotly contested 2020 U.S. presidential election at a particularly discordant time in the nation’s history. Let us not contribute to the divisiveness or acrimony. As a Catholic university community dedicated to reasoned and responsible dialogue and service to justice and the common good, let us inform ourselves about the issues, listen to one another and share ideas openly but respectfully, and engage fully in the democratic process.

In keeping with these goals, this year’s ND Forum theme is Election 2020: Think. Engage Respectfully. Vote.

We have created the ND Forum calendar of events to let you know about the campus conversations and events being planned by many different departments and groups across the University leading up to the election and beyond. I encourage you to participate in these conversations and the many other discussions taking place on campus, whether in the context of a classroom setting, an informal conversation with fellow students or colleagues, or in hosting or attending an event aimed at bringing people together to explore a specific topic. If your department or student organization is organizing an event that you would like to see added to the calendar of events, please send the relevant information to forum@nd.edu.

Let us all engage thoughtfully with the many important issues facing our nation during this election year, and when we disagree, let us do so honestly but with comity, never demonizing or denigrating those whose perspectives might differ from our own. And, please, exercise your right and privilege to vote on Tuesday, November 3.

In Notre Dame,

Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.
President
